Isfahan is famous for the Rose Garden of Martyrs – Golestan-e Shohada, the final resting place for the men and boys killed during the eight-year war between Iran and Iraq. It is hard to know how many men are buried here, but it is a massive place. Each grave has a mounted photograph for a headstone. This brings home the tragic waste of life. Some of the dead were just boys. Brothers lie with brothers, fathers lie with sons. One photo is of a baby, presumably killed during the bombing of the city. Another photo is of a soldier’s dead body, his bandoleer across his chest, taken on the battlefield. It is a moving experience to walk through this sacred place. According to the official literature, hundreds of ground-to-ground missiles and bombs rained down on Isfahan, destroying and damaging many of the city’s monuments, but these have all been repaired.
